In my continuous search for sushi in the District, K-Hon tipped me off to Thai Chef. Located at 1712 Connecticut Avenue, this modern looking Thai restaurant also serves up some fun sushi and has a great happy hour.
I was meeting up with a group of girls from my college days, so this seemed like a perfect spot. The cocktails are tasty—try the Lycheetini—and at $4 a glass from 4-7pm, why not order a few? And, the sushi is solid. We got an assortment, and nothing disappointed—Dragon Roll, Maryland Roll, Eel and Avocado, Spicy Crunchy Albacore, Yellowtail and Scallion, and Real Crab California Roll. The Maryland Roll (at the bottom of the platter) was admittedly a little hard to eat. Legitimate question that came up over dinner: “How do you fit something that big in your mouth?” TWSS.
They definitely earn bonus points for creativity. Check out the Dragon Roll…it’s breathing tobiko fire and sporting a cucumber mane!
Overall, Thai Chef is a great spot for drinks and food at very reasonable prices. It’s not the best sushi you’ll ever eat, but the service is good (my water glass was always full), and it’s just plain fun. I definitely recommend!
